Garden Weddings at Home

In line with the recent reports that outdoor weddings are on the increase, the majority of my ceremonies are held outside in fields, by lakes or (as is becoming very popular) in the couple or family's private gardens.

It goes without saying that the size of your garden will of course dictate as to whether this is at all possible, but if your guest numbers fit, why not consider it? I have conducted several ceremonies at private homes, and gardens, but having just taken another booking from an actual guest that attended one of my May ceremonies, I thought it rather apt that I should shine the light on this style of wedding.

This particular bride-to-be is looking to have a large wedding, and is using her own family home on the Surrey/Hampshire borders as the base for her big day.

The grounds that surround her house are perfect for her al-fresco celebrations and she is keen to keep things elegant and personal. So, in preparation for this big event, she is investing a sum of money (that might normally be spent on hiring a venue) and giving her outside space an overhaul to make sure it is just right for their big day.

Of course, this means that they get to enjoy the fruits of their labour long after the wedding day, and I love that they can then (and without restrictions) decorate this just how they like it. I believe her theme involves festoon lighting, up-lighting some of the larger trees, and lots and lots of home made and personal touches. I can't wait to assist with the ceremony and to create a really lovely wedding experience for them.

There are of course some things to consider before committing yourselves to a wedding at home, and these include, checking that your surroundings are conducive to an all day and evening event. You won't want neighbouring houses affected by noise, or indeed having to share your intimate vows with the sound of a lawnmower or leaf blower in full swing next door! It is always a good idea to inform neighbours of your plans (and possibly even invite them along!) to avoid any awkward moments!

You will also want to consider parking, and vendor access if they are setting up catering or entertainment facilities on site. There are lots of other considerations dependent on the type of day you are hoping to have, but suffice to say, if you have all bases covered and the relevant permissions, then go for it! Having a celebrant-led ceremony will be a perfect accompaniment to your reception at home, and will ensure that you and all of your guests have a truly memorable time.

You can make this special day as personal as you wish, and involve members of family in a relaxed and fun way, or even throw in a few surprises!

Celebrants can work anywhere and at any time, so you could even time your ceremony to coincide with sunset perhaps, or have an afternoon tea theme, or even a BBQ wedding breakfast. . .it's your home, and your day, so why not make it unforgettable!
