Are you dreaming of a destination wedding? Hoping to say "I do" in the sunshine? Or maybe the pull of those palm trees is just too much to ignore? Well, before you book your flights, here are a few things you should know. Just as there are laws that vary throughout the UK, marrying abroad can often prove tricky when it comes to red tape and indeed the requirements that you must meet before saying your nuptials. For example, did you know that marrying in Thailand one of the things you'll need to obtain is an "Affirmation of Freedom to Marry" certificate from the Consular Section of the British Embassy in Bangkok (in person!). Whilst in Spain, one person must have been a Spanish resident for at least two years, and you must allow plenty of time for all the paperwork to be completed. In Greece you'll need at least 8 weeks notice prior to your date, plus a minimum stay on location. These are just some of the more popular destinations and the requirements that must be met, but each Country will have it's own legal red tape and it can be a mine field.
However, never fear, your friendly celebrant is here, and there is a simple solution! As with most celebrant-led weddings in England, you would book with the registry office just to sign the legal paperwork prior to your wedding date, then hold your ceremony wherever and whenever you like! You don't need to have a ceremony there, just take two witnesses, and save your ring and vow exchanges for your actual ceremony. It's cheaper too, so be sure to just ask for the signing room, not the ceremony option.
So, that dreamy ceremony on a beach in Bali, or by the pool at a private villa in Ibiza, is absolutely within your reach! Why waste time, and money jumping through hoops and save that energy and your funds for what's really important, your special day.
